Canadian venture capital funding dropped to US$291 million in the fourth quarter from US$567 million in the third quarter of 2015, says a report from KPMG International and CB Insights. It found the third quarter was particularly strong, producing investment activity that was almost as much as the first two quarters combined despite the fact that the 41 deals that were consummated in the quarter was the lowest quarterly total for the year. For the full year, VC funding in Canada came in at US$1.43 billion across 207 deals. Around the world, it was a record year in 2015 with US$128.5 billion invested in VC-backed companies. This represents a 44 per cent jump from 2014 and a 156 per cent increase from 2013. However, the record year ended on a weak note with just US$27.1 billion invested across 1,742 deals in the last quarter. This represents the lowest deal activity since the first quarter of 2013.
