Gary Ostoich, chair of AIMA Canada, is bullish on the Canadian hedge fund industry. Speaking at its 10th anniversary event, the president of Spartan Fund Management, who has served as chairman of the organization since 2009, said his view is based on a number of factors starting with the quality of new entrants to the industry. And this is a good signal, he said, because often the best opportunities for investors are with new managers. He also said the industry is more institutionalized today. Better practices have been put in place to create better businesses. The shape of the industry is also changing. Five years ago, it was dominated by long bias managers. Now there is a broad range of growth strategies attracting assets and managers are even starting to look outside Canada to invest.
